Rurality and Social Theory: social representation as possibility of analysis

This paper deals with a theoretical discussion about the concept of rurality. It starts from the context of classic and dualistic classification to complexify the understanding of rurality in the contemporary context. A bibliographic review is used to compose a problematization in face of the understanding of what is rural and how it is understood by theorists of Sociology. As a fundamental result of this analysis, we highlight the tradition of treating rurality from an urban perspective, based on a limited classification that does not dialogue with the multiplicity and diversity of social expression produced in rural areas. From this perception, we seek to overcome the rural-urban dichotomy. It can be said that, added to the various current contributions, the prospect of thinking about rurality from and through social representations is a very enriching possibility for research in the field of Rural Sociology.
