Soy crops and family arrangements in Mato Grosso

This paper aims to reflect on the relationship between family and agricultural exploitation in settlements in the north of Mato Grosso. The reflection is based on ethnographic data obtained in rural settlements between 2008 and 2014, whose lands are currently totally occupied by soybeans, not differing from the point of view of the physical occupation of the area, the large farms that predominate in that area state. In a number of ways, the settlers seek to integrate themselves into soybean production, which requires many resources - financial, land, machines, knowledge, names - that are traded as a complex "practice economy". particular, processes of approximation and distance between the members of a given relative. Participating in soybean production in this region has meanings that go far beyond classical economic rationality, especially involving the attempts of the settlers to maintain or at least approach the positions of those who hold the status and prestige associated with the production of soybeans and are recognized as "producers".
