Graduado em Ciências Econômicas pela Universidade Metodista de Piracicaba (1973), Mestre (1976) e Doutor (1988) em Economia pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Renato Maluf realizou programas de pós-doutoramento na Oxford University (UK) em 1996-7 e na Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), 2000-1. Atualmente, no CPDA, Renato Maluf coordena o Centro de Referência em Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional (CERESAN) e integra o Observatório de Políticas Públicas para a Agricultura (OPPA). Seus principais temas de pesquisa são: segurança alimentar e nutricional, agricultura familiar, multifuncionalidade da agricultura e desenvolvimento territorial sustentável. Em novembro de 2007 Renato Maluf foi nomeado Presidente do Conselho Nacional de Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional (Consea), função que desempenha até hoje. Em julho deste ano foi nomeado membro do Comitê Diretivo do Painel de Alto Nível de Especialistas em Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional da Organização das Nações Unidas para Agricultura e Alimentação (FAO).
